Thursday, May 20, 2004
During his lifetime, Tupac Amaru Shakur was a celebrated rapper, gifted actor and incredibly powerful personality. Through his music, Tupac was able to embody the rage, passion, confusion and sacrifice of the young black males of America, creating a vast body of work that has yet to be equaled in both commercial success and critical acclaim. Yet his legacy goes beyond hip hop: Tupac has influenced millions of people around the globe with his candor, warmth, intelligence and drive, and continues to be embraced eight years since his untimely death.

This year, Tupac Shakur would have been 33 years old. On June 16, 2004, a very special party and tribute concert will be held in honor of Tupac. The event is sure to be a memorable celebration, with attendees including Mopreme Shakur, QDIII, Chuck D, Fatal Hussein (Outlawz), dead prez, Immortal Technique, Fred Hampton Jr, members of the Shakur family and many more. There will be live music, a variety of speakers, a birthday bash and more. Proceeds from the event will be going to Dr. Mutulu Shakur, Tupac's step-father, who is currently incarcerated in a federal penitentiary and in need of funds. Also, a portion of the venue will go toward the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation.

In order to raise funds for this event to take place, an Open Mic/Freestyle Compeition will be held on May 29, 2004 at the Stairs Lounge in New York City (map link). Registration for the battle is $10, and there is a $7 fee at the door. All emcees must be 18 and over to compete, so don't forget an I.D. 1st place in the competition wins the champion a spot on a special mixtape that is being assembled for the event, as well as a performance at the Birthday party. Following the battle, attendees 21 and over are invited for the after-party. Dress code is clean, meaning nothing excessively baggey, no jerseys and no headgear.

Raising money is key, so if you would like to make a donation please contact Sadar Khan at candyman187@tmail.com. Donations of $25 and more will be accompanied with a free copy of the mixtape, and a $50 or greater donation includes the mixtape and admission to the party. Please consider contributing some money, even a modest amount, to this event. The organizers hope to make this an annual celebration, so its key that the first one is a success.

This event aims to celebrate Tupac's life and contributions, as well as help Dr. Mutulu Shakur, an important figure in Tupac's life. StreetHop is proud to support this very special event and we hope you will join us in making it a great time. A further list of attendees and specifics will be announced soon.
