Detroit - Afeni Shakur, Bishop Roderic A. Edwards, and Bishop Charlie H. Green are sharing hope and inspiration with the Motor City. February 28-29 Afeni Shakur (mother of slain rapper/actor) will host a series of events in celebration of Black History Month and the publication of her biographical book “Evolution of a Revolutionary.” This book is written by Jasmine Guy and will be in stores beginning February 3.
Ms. Shakur will appear at 3pm on Saturday, February 28 at The Truth Bookstore to sign copies of her biographical book. On Sunday, February 29 at 3:30pm Ms. Shakur will be the keynote speaker at Powerhouse Temple.
The evening of February 29th the city of Detroit is invited to Lighthouse Cathedral for an exciting night of praise as Afeni Shakur Presents Gospel and Gospel Exposure USA announce “Make a Joyful Noise” Choir Competition. All are encouraged to attend and witness explosive God-praising choirs make a joyful noise to the Lord. The winning choir will receive $5,000 and the runner-up will receive $2,000. There is a $100 non-refundable registration fee per choir entering the contest.
Also, Detroit and Highland Park Public High School and Middle School students have the opportunity to enter the Hope and Inspiration Essay Competition. The topic of the essay contest is Hope and Inspiration. Students are asked to write a four hundred to five hundred word essay on what hope means and what or who inspires them. Students may use any one number of sources of inspiration such as a parent, event, teacher, or historical figure. The 1st place winner from the high school category will receive $750 and the 1st place winner from the middle school category will receive $300. 1st place winners from the Detroit Public School District and Highland Park Public School District will be selected. Winners will be announced on Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004 during the Make A Joyful Noise Choir Competition.
The goal of these events whether through literature, spoken word, or songs of praise, is to spread hope and inspiration throughout the Motor City. Events are open to the public and free of charge.
