Soul Singer Drops Tupac Dedication

Does the name Teena Marie ring a bell? Probably not, most of us are probably to young too remember her and her Motown Records released 1979 Rich James produced debut, Wild and Peaceful. Go ask your parents if they remember. Beause of her soulful voice she often got labeled the "white girl who sounds black."

Now 25 years after that release, 48 year old "Lady T", as she is also known, is making a come back to the music scene on an unlikely record label, Cash Money Records.

"My tape just happened to fall into the hands of (Cash Money exec) Ronald Williams," Marie recently told the Kansas City Star. "At first, I was like, Cash Money? I love their stuff, but what am I going to do there?' But they knew all about my history, and they wanted me to produce myself. They were like, "We don't want you to try to do us. We want you to do what you do.'"

Marie's release, La Dona, debuted at No. 6 last month on the Billboard album charts fuled by the single "I'm Still In Love". La Dona also
features songs featuring Common, MC Lyte, Baby and singers Gerald Levert and Rick James. Most surprising is the song called Makaveli Never
Lied, a dedication to Tupac.

"I think people have embraced me because they really can feel that I'm real, and that I'm who I am and I play the music that I love." Sound familiar? I guess there's a little Tupac in us all, even those born 15 years before him.
